Story: The Ocean: Chapter 1: The ocean

The sand was sticking to my feet. Who cared? I rushed out into the glimmering ocean. The temperature sent a chill down my spine. I squealed when a wave crashed down in front of me, causing a loud boom. I was determined to be a daredevil. I swam out and dove under a wave. I popped out, and laughed. I didn't notice how big the next one was until it was too late. People screamed and ran to cower under the palm trees. I laughed at them until I realized that I was alone in the water. The lifeguard  blew his whistle and yelled, "swim across to shore-NOW! It's gonna be too late!" I turned around slowly, saw the wave, and screamed as loud as I could. I was cut off by the loud crash and salt that filled my body. Now I was freaking out. I opened my eyes and saw nothing but darkness. Which way was up? I screamed, then regretted it. I was running out of breath an time. "Soon I will be with you, Gramma."  I thought. All of a sudden, I gasped for air. I saw bubbles in the dark. Then, a strange feeling came over me. I was breathing! But I was underwater... holy fins! I saw a mermaid!
